Planning for ArtsFest 2024 is in full swing with over 30 artists having submitted applications to be part of this exciting celebration of the arts in downtown Kenora. ArtsFest is the flagship event of Lake of the Woods Arts Community (LOWAC) whose purpose is to foster and promote the spirit of creativity in the City of Kenora and the surrounding area of Lake of the Woods; inspiring unity, joy and opportunity through the arts.
The non-profit continues to stage this event annually through the work of a small Board, members, and volunteers. Because it’s mandate is to support artists and artistic development, it is committed to pay artists to be part of the festival.
“Many of the fabulous artists in the region are still recovering from both the financial and personal impacts of the pandemic to our local economy,” said Leanne Fournier, LOWAC’s acting chair. “That, topped with the fact that we are in a fairly remote market, means that we have to continually search for ways to get our artists work on display and into the hearts, hands, and minds of artist lovers and enthusiasts.”
Funding from various key funders makes it possible for LOWAC to pay honorariums to exhibitors in the Artist Showcase and mainstage performers and host a lively and free KidZone where young people of all ages can explore and create art. Plans are also underway for some featured activities for artists of all ages.
With a relatively small membership, none of this would be possible without donations through small and large funders and local businesses and individuals. “We work hard all year, writing grant proposals and reaching out to local businesses and organizations who might want to help us make ArtsFest the best it can be for the community,” said Fournier.
LOWAC is thrilled to have been successful in recently receiving funds from both the Rotary Club of Kenora and the City.
“The Rotary Club of Kenora has a history of supporting the arts within our community,” said Kelly Williams, Director of Community Services Rotary Club of Kenora. “We believe it is not only important to feed the body as we do with programs such as our NOW, Nutrition on Weekend’s program but to feed the mind and spirit which we do through supporting Literacy and Art’s initiatives. The Arts Festival provides opportunities for all to enjoy themselves through various art forms.”
The City of Kenora is also pleased to support events like Artsfest through the 2024 special event grant process.
Other event partners and funders include: Kenora and Lake of the Woods Community Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, Ogimaawabiitong/Kenora Chiefs Advisory, and The Muse.
