If ever there was a medium that artists can count on to find in abundance during a Kenora winter, that medium is snow. But while snow in a Northwestern Ontario winter is a sure thing, weather can play tricks on those who try their hand at the snow sculptures on the Kenora Harbourfront to enter in the Kenora Winter Carnival. This year was particularly tricky for the talented sculptors. Fortunately, Lake of the Woods Arts Community (LOWAC) judges were able to examine, admire and judge this year’s entries just days before a thaw rendered them to slush piles. The winners were announced March 3rd at the beginning of the winter carnival.
LOWAC is currently in the final stages of preparing for the Dip, Dip, and Swing indoor/outdoor art exhibit.
“Dip, Dip and Swing” is an outdoor and indoor art exhibit featuring artwork inspired by the opening of the Cross-Canada Trail- Path of the Paddle and also by Kenora’s hosting of the Canada Summer Games, rowing events, at Rabbit Lake. Artists will have their work exhibited indoors and outdoors throughout the town of Kenora from Mid June to the end of August. There will be a juried show in April. Around mid-June an on-line catalogue of all works will be available for purchase.
The Kenora Rowing Club is hosting the rowing events for the 2017 Canada Summer Games. In celebration artists in the area will be painting sculling oars that represent each of the provinces participating. These oars will be displayed vertically on the chain link fence outside the Rowing Clubhouse from mid -July to the end of the event. Oars will be photographed and put into a catalogue for an on-line auction during the summer.
