LOWAC June 2023 Newsletter

ArtsFest 2023 is shaping up to be a great celebration of the arts on the shores of Lake of the Woods in downtown Kenora on Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our annual flagship event will take place rain or shine in Memorial Park on the grounds of The Muse, 300 Main Street South.

Fun with Fundraising!

ArtsFest is a free, by-donation event. As a donation incentive, we hope to have a gift basket at the LOWAC table. Make a donation = enter your name for a chance to win the basket. If you have a small piece of your work to donate to the basket, or even a gift certificate that could be redeemed for money off a purchase of your work, please let Shauna, our coordinator, know. We will also be making draws for the remainder of the Dip, Dip & Swing paddles throughout the day.

We also would like to have a drink/snack table for attendees (not free – Green Room will be available for artists/volunteers). This would be a LOWAC fundraiser. We were thinking of lemonade and popcorn. Does anyone have any interest in leading this up? Or possibly have or know where we could borrow a large-scale popcorn maker? Or even have a contact at the movie theatre? (As you can tell, this is an idea in progress!)

For visual artists: we are looking for approximately 5 artists who would be interested in painting/drawing “live” at the Matiowski farmers market on July 12. Artists would be set up either on the stage under the White Cap (no spectators would be allowed on stage) or at different locations in and around the tent, “plein-air” style. There would be a set theme, size of the work, and time-frame to complete the piece. LOWAC could supply the canvas for consistency purposes, but artists would supply their own paints/other mediums/brushes. Pieces would then be auctioned off online, via Facebook. Artists can decide on an individual basis what percentage of the sale of their work stays with them and what percentage they are willing to donate to LOWAC. Any feedback on this plan is welcome.

If you would like to participate in any of these Fun-raising ideas, please contact Shauna at lowaccoordinator@gmail.com.

We need you to help us make ArtsFest the best it can be! Volunteer needs for ArtsFest entail setup of tents and tables on July 14 and various tasks on July 15 including assisting vendors with their booths, Greenroom, site hospitality, KidZone crafts and face painting, security, first aid, cleanup, and site takedown. Each volunteer shift will be 3 to 4 hours.

Volunteers will receive a commemorative ArtsFest 2023 t-shirt thanks to the generous support of Kenora Honda and the wizardry design of Tersoo Tsevende!

Market dates

LOWAC will have a table at the July 1 and July 12 Markets at the Jarnel Pavilion. We have limited space but would be open to having an artist join us to do an arts activity/demonstration. Let Shauna know if you’re interested and we’ll see what works best. We also hope to have a live painting demonstration/fundraiser on July 12 as described above and would love to see you there! Drop by to say hi and get more information about ArtsFest!

KidZone

Our lively, interactive KidZone is also shaping up to be a creative space for all ages! Children and youth will have the opportunity to create on their own or follow along with some fun guided activities including Nature, bugs, and butterflies: making art with nature led by Vic Moss of Mosswood Adventures and Rentals and an interactive pottery workshop hosted by Aimee Baldwin of Moon In June Studio.

Art in the Community

We already have or will soon have a number of new artists being showcased at both the Paterson Medical Centre and Kenora Airport. This is another way that LOWAC helps support local artists. Many thanks to LOWAC coordinators Barb Manson (Airport), and Carolyne Lynch and Sue Straight (Paterson).
